February 10, 2012 - The NOW Mid-Suffolk Book Club met at the home of Grace Welch, President Emerita of the chapter.  Present were Grace, Kathryn McCaffrey, member, and Karyn O'Beirne, Committee Chair of the Women & Spirituality Committee.  Angela Bush, Chair of the Reproductive Rights Committee was unable to attend, due to car maintenance.

We reviewed Merle Hoffman's book "Intimate Wars:  The Life and Times of the Woman Who Brought Abortion from the Back Alley to the Boardroom".  Each of us felt admiration for a woman who confronted her mother on what road to take in her life, from education, romantic partner, and career path.  Hoffman founded CHOICES, two years before Roe v Wade, a comprehensive medical center, and a model for others throughout the country.  Hoffman continues in her work, opening a second clinic in Jamaica, Queens, in addition to Choices, at Queens Plaza, Long Island City.

We recommend this book for women and girls to learn about what it takes to overcome obstacles to achieve your goals and dreams.  It is not easy being a feminist in today's society, but here is a roadmap of courage and determination. Published by The Feminist Press, Feministpress.org.
